ABOUT
Sandwip is an island along the south eastern coast of Bangladesh.It is a sub-division of Chittagong District. It is situated at the estuary of the Meghna River on the Bay of Bengal. It is separated from the Chittagong coast by the Sandwip channel.It has a population of nearly 400,000.There are 15 unions in Sandwip. Sandwip is a historical island of Bangladesh.It is located at the nort-eastern side of The Bay of Bengal, nearby the main portcity Of the country,e,g; Chittagong. It is one of the most ancient islands of Bangladesh. The age of the island is about three thousand years.It was ruled by different outsiders in differnt periods of time.Once upon a time it was an idependent sttate ruled by Delwar Khan. Then it was undergone different rullerss. It was a lucrative place for the foreigners. This is why the people from Arab, Portugal, Burma, etc came to the island and tried to take over the power to exploit the islandes and its wealth. The island was very fertile and the people of sandwip were very clever and industrious. So, Sandwip could grow a large amount of crops like paddy, dal, vegetables, wheat,coconut,battle leaf etc. About three hundred ships of salt per year were loaded for export from then Sandwip port. It was also a renoun port for ship bulding industry. The rhen Turkish president Solaiman Demirel when came to Chittagong(1994) cited that they imported their gun ship from Sandwip port as the ships made in sandwip were best ones among the world. Still sandwip is a fertile land to produce differnt types of crops, coconut, melon, and many fruits like mango, pine apple,gaab,jam etc.
Geography
Sandwip is located at 22.4833° N 91.4417° E . It has aproximately 45389 units of house hold and total area 90 km²
Demographics
As of 1991 Bangladesh censusGRBangladeh, Sandwip has a population of 272179. Males constitute are 49.68% of the population, and females 50.32%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 122499. Sandwip has an average literacy rate of 35% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.
Administrative
Sandwip upazila consists of 15 union parishads, 31 mouzas and 34 villages.
Religious institutions
Mosque 265, temple 72, most noted of which are Shahabanu Mosque, Sandwip Town Jami Mosque, Sandwip Town Bazar Mosque and Abdul Gani Chowdhury Mosque.

Population 272179; male 49.68%, female 50.32%; Muslim 87.91%, Hindu 11.51% and others 0.58%.

Average literacy 35.0%; male 40.8%; female 29.5%. Educational institutions: college 3, high school 26, madrasa 14, government primary school 103, non-government primary school 47.

Main occupations
Agriculture 17.23%, fishing 2.65%, agricultural labourer 22.98%, wage labourer 5.48%, transport 2.11%, commerce 10.36%, service 20.32%, renting house 2.45% and others 16.42%.
Land use
Total cultivable land 15120.60 hectares, fallow land 8469.04 hectares; single crop 35%, double crop 45% and treble crop land 20%. Cultivable land under irrigation 85%.
Land control
Among the peasants, 58.96% are landless, 24.04% small and 17% intermediate.
Value of land
The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 7500 per 0.01 hectare.
Main crops
Paddy, jute, potato, aubergine, patal, betel leaf, betel nut, coconut, peanut, palm, vegetables, sugarcane.
Main fruits
Mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya, guava, kul, date, jalpai (olive).
Fisheries only three fisheries.
Communication facilities
Roads: pucca 10 km, semi pucca 19 km and mud road 587 km; waterways 22 nautical mile.
Traditional transport
Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct) and boat.
Manufactories
Rice mill 105, bidi factory 17, ice factory 4, hosiery 3 and printing press 2.
Cottage industries
Weaving 205, blacksmith 28, potteries 44, bamboo and cane work 378, wood work 178 and brass work 11.
Hats, bazars and fairs
Hats and bazars are 32, most noted of which are Akbar Hat, Gat Majir Hat, Shiber Hat, Boktar Hat, Nazir Hat and Dhoper Hat; fair 1 (Baruni Mela).
Main exports
Paddy, fish, betel leaf, betel nut and vegetables.
NGO activities
Operationally important NGOs are asa, proshika, CARE, caritas.
Health centres
Upazila health complex 2, family planning centre 3 and private clinic 3.
Sadnwip Airport
The government of East Pakistan decided to establish an airport in Sandwip before liberation war. At that time half of the work was done. After the liberation, 35 years has passed but we still couldn't finish the work. In failure to accomplish the task, may be a private airport proposal could be submitted to Bangladesh government to revive the project. A good aspect till today that International Airport Information System still has the records of Sandwip Airport. To find our more.....
